While in New York on business–a photo with the hair brand, Outre, I manged to squeeze in a few fun events as well. I was able to attend several fashion shows that my good friend, model and influencer, Nneka (@africanjawn) was walking in. Outside of getting the chance to be a supportive friend, I wasn’t sure where to turn when it came to finding shows to attend.
Another fellow model and influencer, my “Insta-friend” Fennella (@fennellalikewhoa) recommended a site called StyleFashionWeek which has a list of shows going on during fashionweek. Some free, some not but I only RSVP’d for the free ones! Nneka and I were fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend an amazing Elle x Chloe event. I forgot to pack my lashes but the event had a beauty bar for hair and makeup touch ups which was a lifesaver because I walked out looking better than I came in! I actually felt like Naomi Campbell after those touch ups.
And the swag bag was LIT! It included the Tatcha water cream and primer as well as a portable charger. There was also a shoe room hosted by SOREL Boots, where we tried on different shoes and had our favorite pair mailed to our home.
The highlight of my trip was the ESSENCE Street Style event. If this is anything like Essence Festival, I will definitely be making a trip to New Orleans next year! I met up with my good friend and founder of CityRepublik & CityGirlCurlz, Phylicia (@phyliciaalvarez) and we had a ball!
Even though it was a rainy day, people still showed up and showed out! There was complimentary pizza and Coca-cola as well as beautiful African garments, handbags and shoes for sale. I may not have been walking in any shows during New York Fashion Week but I made sure to create my own runway during this event.
There was a photographer who wanted to take a picture of me and when he said, ‘Okay, now we’re doing video‘ all of a sudden I thought I was a Victoria’s Secret model!
There was so much beauty and positive energy at this event, I didn’t want to leave. If you’re wondering whether or not to get a ticket for the Essence Street Style event next year I would definitely say YES! Rain or Shine, Essence knows how to have a good time!
